Behind the Scenes: Recording the Audiobook of Cancer Don’t Care
When I wrote my book Cancer Don’t Care, I knew it would be an emotional journey, but I never imagined how much more emotional—and at times, hilarious—it would become when I set out to record the audiobook. This behind-the-scenes experience was made even more special by sharing it with my daughter, Kendall. And ultimately, it was her voice that truly brought my story to life!
So, I’d like to invite you to go behind the scenes of the Cancer Don’t Care audiobook recording! Join me and my daughter, Kendall, as we bring my story to life—filled with laughter, emotion, and even some hilarious studio moments. Listen now on Audible or grab a copy on Amazon.
Bringing the Story to Life
While I narrated the Preface and Introduction myself, Kendall took the lead in bringing the rest of the book to life. And let me tell you, she absolutely killed it! She didn’t just read my words—she felt them. All of them. You can hear it in her voice. She articulated every ounce of emotion embedded within the pages, paragraphs, and chapters of my story, capturing my journey in a way that was both powerful and deeply moving.

Kendall Sandlin
Listening to Kendall recount my experiences—some painful, some funny, and some incredibly personal—was an experience unlike any other. To hear her read my words, and to feel my words really took it to a whole new level. Although my expectations were already high, she really knocked it out of the park.
I am so proud and honored that she gave her voice to my story!
Breasts, Breasts, and More Breasts
And speaking of personal…let’s talk about the many times that Kendall narrated passages about my breasts. Yep, there I was, sitting with our audio engineer, Roffey, in the control room, listening to my daughter talk about my breasts, double mastectomy, reconstruction surgeries, and all the humorous and awkward moments that came along with it. I mean, nothing brings a mother and daughter closer than breast-related storytelling in a professional recording studio, right?

Roffey and Michelle
To Roffey, I think it must have sounded like breasts, breasts, and more breasts. Maybe. There were definitely times when I could hear a muffled laugh coming from his direction. So, I would just laugh right along with him. At first, I felt compelled to apologize, but then I just rolled with it. Let’s face it, this was a raw, authentic accounting of everything I went through. What I felt, how I looked, what was happening, and so much of it involved my breasts.
But, there were other times when I could hear an emotional sigh as Roffey listened to Kendall’s narration. While that part was unexpected and a little jarring at first, it was validating. He was connecting with my words and my story.
So, all embarrassment aside, I could tell that he was touched by my story.
Fun in the Recording Studio
As always, Kendall and I had a good time in the recording studio, doing what we do best—being us!
There was some downtime in between takes, and we took advantage of them by playing around on the instruments and equipment in the studio. Fortunately for us, Roffey was very indulging! So, we let loose and enjoyed the moment. It was a reminder that even in the midst of hard work, there’s always room for hysterics.
Beyond all the fun, though, this behind-the-scenes journey of recording the audiobook gave me a whole new perspective on my own story. Hearing Kendall narrate my experiences made me relive them in a way I never expected. Kendall’s voice carried the weight of our shared history, and the ever-deepening bond we share. It was an unexpected gift, and one that made the audiobook even more special.
A Huge Thank You to Edgewater Studios
